2023 National Work Zone Awareness Week

Work Zone Awareness

In light of the tragedy that occurred on March 22, 2023, Metzger Wickersham would like to draw focus to this year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week. National Work Zone Awareness Week is an annual event designed to bring attention to the importance of work zone safety. This year, the event will take place from April 17-21, 2023, with the theme "You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us." The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will host the 2023 NWZAW kickoff event on April 18.

Work zones are a common sight on our roads and highways. They are areas where road construction or maintenance is taking place, and they are often marked by signs, cones, and barriers. Work zones can be dangerous for both workers and motorists, and it is essential to take precautions to ensure everyone's safety.

According to workzonesafety.org, in 2020, 857 people were killed in 774 fatal work zone crashes. The majority of those killed were motorists and their passengers. This highlights the need for drivers to slow down and stay focused when approaching and passing through a roadway work zone. It is also important to be aware of changing road conditions and follow the instructions of flaggers and other workers in the area.

While motorists have a significant role to play in work zone safety, it is also essential to remember the workers who are performing the construction or maintenance work. In 2020, 117 workers died in work zones, underscoring the need for proper safety protocols and training for those working in these areas. This includes wearing appropriate safety gear and following all safety guidelines and procedures.

The theme of this year's National Work Zone Awareness Week, "You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us," emphasizes the importance of collaboration between motorists and workers to ensure everyone's safety. By following speed limits, paying attention to changing road conditions, and respecting the work zone, motorists can help prevent accidents and keep workers safe.

In conclusion, National Work Zone Awareness Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of work zone safety. By working together, we can ensure the safety of both motorists and workers in these areas. Remember to slow down, stay focused, and follow all safety guidelines when approaching and passing through a work zone.
