PennDOT Announces Record Low Numbers for Traffic-Related Fatalities

1,137. That is how many people were killed on Pennsylvania roads in 2017. Although that is a record low since the state began tracking traffic fatalities in 1928, it is still shockingly high.

Traffic safety and enforcement certainly play a role in reducing these numbers but increased awareness of the dangers of distracted driving is assisting as well. Human error remains the biggest factor in causing traffic crashes that lead to a fatality.

Pennsylvania's 1,137 total deaths in 2017 was 51 lower than in 2016 and 173 lower than in 2012.

Even PennDOT admits last year’s total is unfortunately way too many. "It is still way too high...We will not rest until we do everything we can to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on our roadways," PennDOT Secretary, Leslie Richards said.

PennDOT also released the following facts regarding traffic deaths in 2017:

  • 30 fewer people were killed while unbuckled.
  • 22 fewer pedestrians were killed.
  • 95 fewer deaths involved drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • 230 fewer people died in impaired driver crashes than in 2012.
  • 94 percent of crashes are still due to human error.
