1 Killed and Over 20 Injured in 1-81 Accident Caused by Snow

There was one fatality and almost two dozen people injured in a pileup crash on Interstate 81 North on the afternoon of Friday, March 3, 2017.

The incident, which involved cars, tractor-trailers and various other commercial vehicles, took place between Exit 131A and Exit 138 in Schuylkill County. According to officials, the 32-vehicle pileup was triggered by a snow squall that caused temporary white-out conditions.

Police say the victim killed in the crash was Charles M. Ehrenberg, 55, of Hazleton, PA; he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Emergency crews rushed 23 injured victims to local hospitals, and others were bussed to a hotel where they were provided food, drinks and a warm place to wait for a ride.
