New iPhone Feature Will Block Texts While Driving

Apple plans to introduce a new iPhone feature that will prevent the dangerous habit of reading or sending a text message while driving. The feature is being rolled out as part of Apple’s iOS 11, the newest version of the operating software for the popular Apple devices.

The feature is being called “Do Not Disturb While Driving” and is the latest piece of technology being used to end distracted driving. Whenever the phone is connected to a car using a cable or the car’s Bluetooth, the iPhone will withhold any notifications for things like text messages, news updates, or other alerts. The feature will also work any time the vehicle is moving.

If you do receive a text while you are driving, the iPhone can respond with an automatic message telling the sender you are driving and cannot respond. The feature will also lock the iPhone screen to prevent drivers from using many of their apps while driving. Drivers will be able to see Apple Maps while driving, but will not be able to input destinations.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 8 people are killed each day in crashes involving distracted driving. At Metzger Wickersham, we applaud any new technology intended to stop this dangerous behavior.
